Raised with Aloha by our Ohana for yours 🤙🌈
Kinohi Poultry was established 2012 on the half acre lot that was our home at the time. Being appalled at how Big Ag raised meat and seeing a need for change we purchased our first turkeys for Thanksgiving. These were the fast growing production birds that the painters made famous for the holidays. They were amazing teachers.
A little bit about Drew and Channa
Neither Drew or Channa come from farming Ohanas / families, but one could say that was for the best. Without preconceived ideas on how farming was ¨supposed¨ to be done our little Ohana were free to farm how WE thought it should be done. That includes making our own mistakes .Which brings us back to our amazing first teachers.
The beginning.
We purchased 4 turkeys for that Thanksgiving. Only 2 made it to the planed processing day and 1 of those was pardoned because she was just to nice. First lesson taught, don´t name the intended meal. The second lesson these amazing birds taught us was, just because they can eat a lot of food doesn´t mean they should be fed all they can eat. The 2 of the 4 that didn´t make it to the planned processing day got so big so fast that they had to be processed in September. 3rd lesson taught, farming doesen´t always go as planed.
At that time we decided heritage turkeys were what we wanted to mainly focus on as our holiday offerings. Now that doesn´t mean that production turkeys or chickens don´t have there place, it just means we had to rethink how we were wanted to grow those types.
Now
We´ve moved on from that half acre home of 10 years ago to a much larger farm in Caroline County, and with a big move came a lot of changes. But what hasn´t changed is how we do things. All farm raised meat has it´s place, heritage and production, what maters is the amount of Aloha that goes into the product. Aloha is a very special Hawaiian word. It has many meanings but broken down it is, Alo - presence, and Ha - breath. Or the breath of life. Big Ag is missing that. So at Kinohi Poultry we strive to farm and raise meat with Aloha formost in mind. Well Aloha and Ohana.
Mahalo ia ´oe, From Kinohi Poultry
Hard truth number 1. Big Ag is in the business of raising their bottom line, not raising your ohana (family). That means they will do what ever is in the best interest of achieving that bottom line, growth hormones, cramped living conditions, regulated artificial daylight, to name a few.
Hard truth number 2. That won't be changing anytime soon. Don't get us wrong, they have gotten better, but better is not enough when you are in charge of living creatures. Be it barn yard or in the kitchen of your consumers.
Hard truth number 3. And this is the hardest truth. Small ohana farm producers are disappearing. That means getting healthy ethically raised meat is challenging.
Kinohi Poultry's Hard Truths
Number 1. We care about our ohana and yours. We will never put into our animals what we wouldn't want in our ohana or yours.
Number 2. And that won't be changing anytime soon (see what I did there).
Number 3. We are Kahu 'Aina. That means we are our farms stewards and therefore responsible for all the lives that are on it or those touched by what comes form it. It is our Ohana's privilage to make healthy ethically raised meat a little less challenging to find. All our animals are raised with Aloha in mind.
